Often, in doing spiritual work with myself and with others, I use the various seasons as metaphors for our life journeys. Read through the final verse of Mary Oliver’s poem, “Fall Song”, and see how it speaks to you of your journey at this stage of your life. Read the words more than once, perhaps aloud. Imagine the bright leaves and the movement. Then sit with the words and images and let them sink in.
I try to remember when time’s measure
painfully chafes, for instance when autumn
flares out at the last, boisterous and like us longing
to stay – how everything lives, shifting
from one bright vision to another, forever
in these momentary pastures.
