During Epiphany, when UCUCC’s worship theme was In Search of Refuge, a play based on the book Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family’s Journey was presented in worship. The play was videotaped by Monty VanderBilt, and is now available here:
The book tells the story of a Syrian family’s flight to safety from war in their homeland. It was written for children by Canadian author Margriet Ruurs and was illustrated by Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr. “Stepping Stones” has been nominated for numerous awards and was the 2017 winner of Bolen Books Children’s Book Prize. The author was inspired to write the book after seeing the art of Nizar Ali Badr.
University UCC’s Creativity Council hired local artist Sam Vance to direct a dramatic retelling of this story in worship. The production included a video of Nizar Ali Badr creating his art, narration of the story in both English and Arabic, projected illustrations from the book, music chosen by our Arabic narrators, sound effects and also movement by actors from our congregation enhancing the spoken narrative. The Arabic narrators, Adham and Lama, fled Syria with their children several years ago and eagerly became involved in the production through their friendship with Sam.
