The Council of the University Congregational UCC met October 17, 2018 in the Scheyer Library.
Financial report discussion:
Pledge/offerings revenue is behind budget. In part, this is because of some deaths and transfers. Facilities revenue is down, again this is because of lower-than-hoped-for revenue from Lot C. Expenses are within 1% of budget.
Pledge Campaign discussion:
Some expressed concerns about the possibility of declining pledges for 2019, as we have had declining attendance and general fatigue over the past 2 years. This is a unique time and it would be good to respond with passionate grateful generosity. Council members discussed and completed an “Ex Ante” form to vote for budget priorities which will help guide the budget committee in the coming months.
An undesignated bequest from Lois Ann Pearson was received with deep gratitude. In keeping with policy, $500 of this will be designated for the New Initiatives Fund, and the balance will be designated for the UCUCC Permanent Endowment Fund. Council members who knew Lois Ann and Russ Pearson honored their participation in this church and shared memories of times and special moments.
Encampment Hospitality Team:
Council approved a proposal from the Encampment Hospitality Team to offer to host Tent City 3 starting in August 2019.
Council discussed the Leadership retreat outcomes and some positive discussion that has taken place in committees following the retreat. The challenge of keeping leadership engaged and integrated (especially future new leaders who did not attend the retreat) was noted. For the next month or two Council members are to think about books they would like to suggest for Council to read to fulfill one of our commitments for the Racial Justice priority.
Peter requested help with closure over the coming months. If one has thoughts or ideas about how to facilitate this process, suggestions would be welcome.
Interim Search Committee:
Council reviewed the recommendation from the Interim Search Committee to proceed with recruiting a long-term (1-2 year) temporary replacement for Peter’s position and approved $10,000 in funding from the personnel contingency budget to facilitate recruitment and hiring. Through a second process, UCUCC will engage in reimagining our life together as a congregation.
