January always feels like a good time to start a new project, so spending last month training with David Anderson and learning the ins and outs of UCUCC finance and operations felt like auspicious timing— a new beginning for me, here, at the start of a new decade. As a theater-maker, I’m interested in how stories shape our lives, and during my training the question I found myself asking most is “What’s the story here?”. David has decades of stories about this church: the history and context of our various spaces, procedures, committees, and systems. He also is full of stories, humorous and deeply heartfelt, about all of you.
I am working to learn the story of this church. The budget tells a story of what you value— I can see, within the line items, a church putting its money where its heart is. The way the space is used, how committees are structured, how many folks are involved, all that tells a story of a community deeply committed to living out God’s work in the word. I am working to learn the story of this church, but I’d also like to start creating my own stories with each of you. Come by and say hello sometime!
